Today is Thalaivar Birthday. Happy Birthday Thalaivaa...Rajni is my childhood hero, SuperStar... Being a Rajnifan, my mother criticized me a stupid guy and my wife says an educated stupid. However to me, SuperStar Rajni is always a feeling, emotion. It needs to be emotionally experienced. It cant be explained in words. Rajni is like Love, God. It needs to be felt, emotionally connected and can't be understood in words. Every Rajni fans feel this emotion when R...A...J...N...I... appears in the screen. Lessons learnt as a Rajni Fan:- - I have been watching Rajni movies from 8 years onwards. Thalaivar is always faith. He always wins in the end in every movie. This gives tremendous faith and confidence from childhood. At times, this faith, brutal faith is required in life. This brutal faith(குறுட்டு நம்பிக்கை) helped me in many occasions to take leap faith in my decision making.. - Due to this blind faith, I came to Chennai as a jobless guy similar to Rajni movies after completing my Engineering,. One should always go towards opportunities, Opportunity wont come in our door steps. In movies, Rajni becomes Rich in one song. However, it took me 8 years to stand on my own legs. Uphill journey was full of pain and suffering. Eventually I was able to stand on my own feet after 8 years of hard work. By taking that first step is the key. - I adore Rajni because of his humility. As Valluvan says, அடக்கம் அமரருள் உய்க்கும். He never considered himself as Rajnikanth. He always think himself as SivajiRao. That is why, He is able to career the burden of Superstar Title on his shoulders for 40 years. He always raises his hands upwards(towards God) and it is very good way to stay detached from your success or failures. Detached Attachment from your position and title help to move forward in life. - Rajni songs are always a motivational booster for me whenever I feel demotivated in life. These are my favorite lines. ஆண் : உன் கையை நம்பி உயர்ந்திட பாரு உனக்கென எழுது ஒரு வரலாறு ஆண் : உனக்குள்ளே சக்தி இருக்கு அதை உசுப்பிட வழி பாரு சுப வேளை நாளை மாலை சூடிடு ஆண் : அட எவனுக்கு என்ன குணம் எவனுக்கு என்ன பலம் கண்டதில்லை ஒருவருமே ஒரு விதைக்குள்ள அடைபட்ட ஆலமரம் கண் விழிக்கும் அதுவரை பொறு மனமே.. https://www.coursera.org/learn/the-science-of-well-being • How Can We Overcome Our Biases Objectives • Understand that experiential purchases are a better investment than material ones • Give examples of intentional activities you can do to overcome cognitive biases and improve your mood • Practice healthy habits like exercising for 30 minutes a day and getting over 7 hours of sleep a night Part 1 - Rethink "Awesome Stuff" https://www.coursera.org/learn/the-science-of-well-being/lecture/fnM3M/part-1-rethink-awesome-stuff Strategies that you can use INTENTIONALLY to overcome your biases Invest in Experiences Our intentional, effortful activities have a powerful effect on how happy we are, over and above the effects of our set points and the circumstances in which we find ourselves – Sonja Lyubomirsky Part of us believes the new care is better because it lasts longer. But in fact that’s the worst thing about the new car… it will stay around to disappoint you – Dan Gibert “A new car sticks around to disappoint you. But a trip to Europe is over. It evaporates. It has the good sense to go away, and you are left with nothing but a wonderful memory.” – Dan Gilbert. Most material possessions we buy stick around, allowing us to get used to them, or, in other words, experience hedonic adaptation. On the other hand investing more in experiences can more effectively increase our happiness, because experiences are, by nature, fleeting. Stop investing in material things. Most material possessions we buy stick around, allowing us to get used to them, or, in other words, experience hedonic adaptation. If we don’t buy material things in the first place, we won’t experience the hedonic adaptation and we will be able to invest more in other things - like experiences - that will more effectively increase our happiness. Experiences can make us happier than stuff. Part 2 - Thwart Hedonic Adaptation https://www.coursera.org/learn/the-science-of-well-being/lecture/EVVHW/part-2-thwart-hedonic-adaptation Set of stratgies #1 Savoring – The act of stepping outside of an experience to review and appreciate it. Overcome Biases Summary https://www.coursera.org/learn/the-science-of-well-being/lecture/01esQ/overcome-biases-summary • Exercise & Sleep every day for at least one week This week’s exercise: Let’s Get Physical Research suggests that ~30 minutes a day of exercise can boost your mood in addition to making your body healthier. Be sure to take a moment to notice how much better you feel after getting some exercise in. • Sleep! One of the reasons we’re so unhappy in our modern lives is that we’re consistently sleep deprived. Research shows that sleep can improve your mood more than we often expect. Make sure you get four nights of 7+ hours over the course of the week. • Getting enough sleep also has a host of other health benefits. It can decrease your risk of heart disease, diabetes and even cancer. It's a totally free and super easy way to boost your mood and your health. • Why do we mispredict what makes us happy? • Understand that our strongest intuitions are often misleading (Annoying Feature of the Mind #1) • Why does miswanting occur? o According to Tim Wilson and Dan Gilbert who coined the term, miswanting is “the act of being mistaken about what and how much you will like something in the future”. • • Understand that we judge ourselves relative to reference points which are often irrelevant and make us feel worse than we should (Annoying Feature of the Mind #2) • We are constantly judging relative to other stuff out there in the world, and it messes up our judgement of what the thing we really care about. • So the more TV you watch, the more unhappy you are with your own income. • Understand that our minds are programmed to adapt and ultimately get used to things (Annoying Feature of the Mind #3) • Hedonic adaptation is the process of becoming accustomed to a positive or negative stimulus such that the emotional effects of that stimulus are attenuated over time. In other words, the hedonic adaptation is the process of things becoming the “new normal”, so that the things that make you happy, make you less happy over time. • Understand that we don’t realize how good we are at adapting and coping and mispredict how certain outcomes will make us feel (Annoying Feature of the Mind #4) • Impact bias, a cognitive bias, is the tendency to overestimate the intensity or the duration of future emotions and states of feeling. This overestimation can occur for both positive and negative feeling states. • Impact bias is worse for negative events! • Discover how cognitive biases (Annoying Features of the Mind) impact your daily life Credit - Dr. Laurie Santos, Professor, Yale University This week’s exercise: • This week exercise is Savouring and write Gratitude Journal • Practice Kindness – do one Random act of kindness everyday o A simple act of doing something nice. o Can come with a host of positive benefits o Doing nice things for others can increase our mood o Just got a nice stuff for people o Can increase our feelings of social connection o it could be something big like donating money or volunteering in your community. Or it can be something small like giving somebody a compliment or just doing something nice o it'll make you feel better than you expect. • Practice Social connection – Seek out more social connection. • being socially connected makes us happier. • Turns out that the simple act of making a new social connection, talking to a stranger on a train, or even at a coffee shop can significantly increase our positive mood. • So, how do you make the most of this activity? We just want you to seek out more social connection, strike up a conversation with a friend, or grab lunch with someone you haven't seen in a while, or even strike up a fast conversation with a stranger, and then track that you did it. • As we've seen, tracking will help us turn one act of social connection into a habit. So, get out there and find a friend or chat with somebody new. The simple act of making a social connection, will make you happier than you expect. Bottomline: Most of the GOALS we think will make us happy, don't really make us happy.
This week’s exercise:
• This week exercise is Savouring and write Gratitude Journal
• Savoring
o It could be a nice shower, a delicious meal, a great walk outside, or any experience that you really enjoy.
o These techniques include: sharing the experience with another person, thinking about how lucky you are to enjoy such an amazing moment, keeping a souvenir or photo of that activity, and making sure you stay in the present moment the entire time.
• Gratitude
o take 5-10 minutes each night to write down five things for which you are grateful.
o They can be little things or big things.

Happiness can be learned
Over the next 7
weeks, we’ll explore what new results in psychological science teach us about
how to be happier, how to feel less stressed, and how to flourish more.
We’ll then have
a chance to put these scientific findings into practice by building the sorts
of habits that will allow us to live a happier and more fulfilling life.
To address levels
of student depression, anxiety, and stress
How the science
of psychology can provide important hints about how to make wiser choices and
how to live a life that’s happier and more fulfilling.
Goal was to
present these scientific findings in a way that made it clear how this science
could be applied in people’s daily lives.
During this
course, you’ll have the opportunity to enhance your own well-being by
implementing a few simple research-based methods to your own life.
More recently, Ms
Laurie developed The Happiness Lab, a podcast that has been downloaded more than 8.5M times
since its launch in September 2019 and has been a mainstay on the Apple
Podcasts top shows chart. The show takes through the latest
scientific research and shares surprising and inspiring stories that
will forever alter the way you think about happiness. - http://podcasts.pushkin.fm/happiness-lab?sid=coursera-intro
current level of happiness:
acronym for Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and
Accomplishment— the basic dimensions of psychological flourishing). The
questionnaire is 23 questions and once you submit your responses, you will
receive scores ranging from 0-10 for each pillar along with scores for overall
well-being, health, and negative emotions.
Happiness Inventory Score:
Authentic Happiness Inventory. It’s a quick set of 24 questions that
provides an overall measure of your happiness levels. At the end of the survey
you will receive a score between 1 and 5 based on your responses.
Find Your Signature Strengths
week you will also have an opportunity to identify your Character Strengths,
which we’ll learn more about in an upcoming lecture. To identify your Character
Strengths, take the online test available on the VIA website. The test comprises 120 questions
and takes 30 minutes or so. There are no right/wrong answers, and there are no
better/worse answers. The key is to be authentic, so that you can derive the
most from the experience. Encourage your co-workers, friends, and family to
take the questionnaire too, so that you can discuss your respective scores and
the idea behind the VIA with them. After taking the test, you will get the
ranking of your 24 strengths. Print it out if you can and keep track of your
top 4 strengths.

நீங்க நல்லவரா கெட்டவரா? – My 2
cents are, no one is 100% good person or 100% bad person. We all have a shades
of grey in everyone of us. There is a good person in a bad guy and there is a
bad guy in a good person. We cannot classify some as Good person or bad person.
It is not binary always.. It is aligned with William Shakespeare Quote – “There
is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so”.
Bribing is wrong. லஞ்சம் வாங்கறதும்
தப்பு லஞ்சம் கொடுக்கறதும் தப்பு. Just because everybody is bribing, bribing is not
the right approach.
Keep all documents properly in tact so that you can walk
