As we have completed all the 7 Habits of Stephen Covey, I want take up
“Greatness Series” to address other best behaviours, habits, simplifying tools,
good books, Videos, TED Talks and resources.

I mentioned about my mid-life crisis yesterday. If anyone looks outside
of myself, they may think my life is beautiful. However I was tormenting myself
in my head as I was not successful as Directors, SVP or CEO. I hated myself to
the core. Being an introvert, I was very in shell and hurting myself a lot. I
wanted to be more and was having high achievers syndrome. Attained goals were
not giving any more satisfaction. I was trapped in X+1 syndrome. I was
dejected, disappointed and devastated.

I was feeling frustrated, depressed and full of anger. I was at my
bottom most part of my life. During that time, I landed on this book

Today’s topic is Eckhart Tolle’s – The Power of Now. Over 3 million
copies are sold till 2008.

Lessons from the book:-
The book is intended to be a guide for day-to-day living and
stresses the importance of living in the present moment and transcending
thoughts of the past or future.

Its core message is that people's emotional problems are
rooted in their identification with their minds.
[8] The
author writes that an individual should be aware of their "present
moment" instead of losing themselves in worry and anxiety about the past
or future.
[2]

According
to the book, only the present moment is important, and both an individual's
past and future is created by their thoughts. The author maintains that
people's insistence that they have control of their life is an illusion
"that only brings pain". The book also describes methods of relaxation
and meditation to aid readers in anchoring themselves in the present. These
suggestions include slowing down life by avoiding multi-tasking, spending time
in nature, and letting go of worries about the future.

Introduction

In the book's introduction the author
relates his past experiences of continuous anxiety with periods of suicidal
depression. Later, when he was 29 years old, he had a personal epiphany and
writes: "I heard the words 'resist nothing' as if spoken inside my
chest." He relates that he felt as if he were falling into a void and
afterwards "there was no more fear."
[11]

Chapter Two: "Consciousness: The Way Out of Pain"

In this chapter the author writes: "pain can only feed on pain.
Pain cannot feed on joy. It finds it quite indigestible".
[8] The author goes on to
write that "many people live with a tormentor in their head that
continuously attacks and punishes them and drains them of vital energy. It is
the cause of untold misery and unhappiness."
[5]

Chapter Three: "Moving Deeply Into the Now"

In Chapter Three, the author writes: "In the normal,
mind-identified or unenlightened state of consciousness, the power and creative
potential that lie concealed in the Now are completely obscured by
psychological time. You cannot find yourself by going into the past. You can
find yourself by coming into the present. Life is now. There was never a time
when your life was not now, nor will there ever be."
[8]

Chapter Four: "Mind Strategies for Avoiding the
Now"
[edit]

In Chapter Four, Tolle says that
"tomorrow's bills are not the problem" and can be a "core
delusion" that changes a "mere situation, event or emotion" into
a reason for suffering and unhappiness.
[13] The book also calls
"waiting" a "state of mind" that we should snap ourselves
out of.
[13]

My lessons after reading the
book

Echkart
takes about two identities within ourself. One identity is “I am”
(Conceptualized Self / Mind Driven / Egoist Mind) and Self (Atma/consciousness
etc). Even all spiritual teachers, mentors, philosophers are telling these two
identities within everyone.

If
we go to science, Daniel kahneman, nobel prize winner and author of Thinking,
Fast and slow says we have two identities “Remembering Self” and “Experiencing
Self”.

Bottom-line,
two identities are universally accepted phenomena.

As
long as we operate in Egoist Self/Conceptualized self, we are in constant fear,
anxiety, struggle in life.

சொந்த
காசுல சூன்னியம் வச்சுக்கிற மாதிரி , I used to beat myself to
the core. I wanted to achieve more and do more. I was in a constant state of
stress, anxiety and depression.

After
reading this book, I realized two profound messages which I want to share
today.

Firstly,
Life is like a playing a snake and ladder game. I do get snake and I do get my
ladder. In fact, there is a big snake in the game which took me from 99 to 3.
When that happens in game, I was able to play the game continuously..  Wheras life, I was cribbing myself and I was
talking about my pains etc. etc. I was constantly in denial. I used to ask “Why
Me” questions to myself. I was not able to accept myself as I am.

Now
I realized Success and failures are two various incidents. As Vairamuthu says,
வெற்றியும் தோல்வியும் இரு வேறு நிகழ்வுக்கள். I do not get carried away by
the results. I still continue to play the game of life with complete presence.
Similar to AR Rahman, He use to life up his hands and says “
எல்லா புகழும் இறைவனைக்கே”. He is not burdened by outcomes
of life.

Now
I have accepted myself a lot. Every day, every moment, I am doing my best with
best of my abilities.

Secondly, I could relate to Shakespeare saying, “All
the world's a stage,/ And all the men and women
merely players.” The meaning of this phrase is that this world is
like a stage show, and all human beings are merely actors
by William Shakespeare

With
this awareness, I am able accept myself and even others fully, my role and I am
doing by best of my capabilities.

Similar to playing Snake and Ladder game, let us all play
the game of life with complete acceptance and with complete presence.

I see Heroes and Heroines as Stars in the sky, various life
struggles as Tornados, I would say,
நட்சத்திரங்களை
சூறாவளிகள் ஒன்றும் செய்வதில்லை

Let us all take Power of Now in our hands to live 100 years
life in a peace manner.

Popular Quotes

·
“Realize
deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus
of your life.”
·
“Time
isn’t precious at all, because it is an illusion. What you perceive as precious
is not time but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious
indeed. The more you are focused on time—past and future—the more you miss the
Now, the most precious thing there is.”
·
“Love
is not selective, just as the light of the sun is not selective. It does not
make one person special. It is not exclusive. Exclusivity is not the love of
God but the "love" of ego. However, the intensity with which true
love is felt can vary. There may be one person who reflects your love back to
you more clearly and more intensely than others, and if that person feels the
same toward you, it can be said that you are in a love relationship with him or
her. The bond that connects you with that person is the same bond that connects
you with the person sitting next to you on a bus, or with a bird, a tree, a
flower. Only the degree of intensity with which it is felt differs.”
·
“Any
action is often better than no action, especially if you have been stuck in an
unhappy situation for a long time. If it is a mistake, at least you learn
something, in which case it's no longer a mistake. If you remain stuck, you
learn nothing.”
·
“If you
get the inside right, the outside will fall into place. Primary reality is
within; secondary reality without.”
·
“It is
not uncommon for people to spend their whole life waiting to start living.”
·
Andrew Ryder, wrote a dissertation saying that "Tolle
moves the traditional teaching forward by illustrating how our obsession with
the past and the future ... [prevents] us from giving our full attention to the
present moment."

“I keep Eckhart’s book at my bedside. I think it’s
essential spiritual teaching. It’s one of the most valuable books I’ve ever
read.”

Brief description about the
book:-

Eckhart Tolle's message is simple: living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. And while this message may not seem stunningly original or fresh, Tolle's clear writing, supportive voice and enthusiasm make this an excellent manual for anyone who's ever wondered what exactly "living in the now" means. Foremost, Tolle is a world-class teacher, able to explain complicated concepts in concrete language. More importantly, within a chapter of reading this book, readers are already holding the world in a different container--more conscious of how thoughts and emotions get in the way of their ability to live in genuine peace and happiness.

Tolle packs a lot of information and inspirational ideas into The Power of Now. (Topics include the source of Chi, enlightened relationships, creative use of the mind, impermanence and the cycle of life.) Thankfully, he's added markers that symbolise "break time". This is when readers should close the book and mull over what they just read. As a result, The Power of Now reads like the highly acclaimed A Course in Miracles--a spiritual guidebook that has the potential to inspire just as many study groups and change just as many lives for the better. –By Gail Hudson
