1. Set your sail.


The major difference isn’t circumstance; it’s the set of the sail, or the way we think—it’s what we do after we’ve set our sails and the wind decides to change direction. When the winds change, we must change. We have to struggle to our feet and reset the sail in a manner that will steer us in the direction of our own deliberate choice. The set of the sail, or how we think and how we respond, has a far greater capacity to destroy our lives than any challenges we face. How quickly we respond to adversity is far more important than adversity itself.
The great challenge of life is to control the process of our own thinking.

2. Learn from success and failure.

Study from people who do well. Each of us should be in a constant search for people we admire and respect and whose behavior we can model. It’s far better to deliberately choose the people we will permit to influence us than to allow bad influences to affect us without our conscious choice.

3. Read all you can.

There are two books you need to read to build your philosophy: Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason.

4. Keep a journal.

Jot down what you learn and be a buyer of empty books. It’s the small disciplines that lead to great accomplishments.

5. Observe and listen.

Be alert. Be awake. 
Be a good listener. 


Every day is filled with dozens of personal crossroads, moments when we’re called upon to make a decision regarding minor as well as major questions.

7. Don’t neglect.

Set up new disciplines to change your life. Don’t neglect. Everything is within our reach if we will read books, use journals, practice the disciplines and wage a new and vigorous battle against neglect.

Build your philosophy. Commit yourself to a new journey and say, I’m going to change my life. Once you do, you’ll never look back.

I found it very simple and so powerful. I wanna make a baby steps in this new direction. Not yet there(I can resonate with Robert Frost Poem here - miles to go before I sleep). 



Do it in smaller chunk, and do it often - Pomodoro Technique

I learnt a simple and useful technique from Coursera which help me to be more productive and highly efficient.
As always I think a lot before getting into action, most of times I ended up procrastinating. In fact, I am happy with me being an excellent award winning procrastinator rather than doing something useful(action oriented).
Then I learnt Pomodoro Technique from Learning How to Learn from Coursera course(This is one of the top rated course in Coursera.. It is 100% FREE. It is a best course to start the online learning and gets a taste of it).  I wanted to give it a try and results are amazing.
What is Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks.



How is it helping me to be more productive and efficient?
  • It gives me a "Do it in smaller chunk, and do it often" approach and mindset.
  • Thinking about reading a 400 pages book on Agile/Personality development makes me so energy draining(Yes I agree...Typical pro-castor approach). Having a fixed time limits, helps me to get into action mode easily.
  • As I am doing it in a smaller chunks, I am getting a feeling for moving forward with my set of tasks.. 
  • I get a feeling of more accomplishment.
  • I also look forward for the 5 mins rest time which is so rewarding.
  • I changed my morning routine by applying this technique(It is just my example, everyone can choose these according to their interests and priorities)
    • Reading a book on Agile(it can be anything) for 25 mins
    • Take a break for 5 mins
    • Then reading a second book or the same book(currently reading 4 hour work week by TIm Ferris) for another 25 mins
    • Again 5 mins break (similar to commercial breaks)
    • Finally I end my morning routine with Yoga for another 25 mins...

5 Sec Rule - Procrastination to Action

I landed on an easy(looks stupid) tip that transformed me from procrastination to action. It works.

I am following this technique every day / every hour and at every possible opportunity.

Before I reveal the technique, let me share my experiences.

I am a typical guy who procrastinates and think a lot even to do small things in daily life.

  1. Getting up early in the morning is always a hassle for me. I keep pressing snooze button again and again.
  2. Going to vegetable market on weekends - I know this has to be done every week. Even for such a small thing, I think about a perfect time to start. I keep pushing it until late in the evening on Sunday wherein I need to rush to the market as my stock becomes empty.
  3. Being a constant thinker, I would think 10 times before I call someone. I look for a perfect time to call someone. That also gets pushed and pushed. Most of the times, I won't even call. I am always looking for a perfect time to call as I do not want to disturb the other person.
  4. Even day to day stuff, I am dragging myself to do any work.
  5. so on and so forth.
One fine morning I landed on a life hack video from Mel Robbins. I was amazed by the small technique which transformed me.

Before any action, say 5..4..3..2..1.. start... That is the whole technique. Looks simple. As Mel says, It looks stupid. But it works all the time. 

The 5 Second Rule is simple. If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it.
The moment you feel an instinct or a desire to act on a goal or a commitment, use the Rule.
When you feel like hesitating before doing something that you know you should do, count 5-4-3-2-1-GO and move towards action. It works when you count down and not count up.
Why it works?
We all have fast brain and slow brain. Get into immediate action mode comes from fast brain. This is quick technique to hack your brain and get into action.

Mel applied this technique. Transformed herself and she even wrote a book on this. There are 3 million followers who are using this technique.

After I discovered this approach, I am using it daily to get up at 4.30 am everyday without fail. This has been happening for more than 50 days. I am sure I have crossed a milestone of 21/45 days. 

I am also applying this technique on the 4 other examples I have quoted above.

It is truly a life hack. It works. It works for me. You can give it a try.
