Eradication of Worries
Book: Yoga for Modern Age by Vethathiri
Maharishi

Introduction

Worry is a
kind of mental disease arising out of wrong calculations. The state of one’s
inability to achieve the things desired or to estimate the consequence
correctly and then lose one’s mental balance is worrying. The deficiency of
stock against need, or the difference between the proposition and achievement,
or the difference between what one imagines should happen and what actually
happens, is the basic reason for Worry. The happenings are a chain of actions
based on the principle of the Cause-and-Effect system under the Law of Nature.
To estimate a benefit or a result without understanding the Law of Nature is a
basic mistake often committed by man and this alone creates Worry.
Inefficiency
and fear are the two main factors that give rise to worries.
Losing one’s mental alertness, incapability to understand the Law
of Nature and lack of basic training in thinking and achieving to solve
problems can be deemed inefficiency. To imagine the consequences of one’s
own actions always into bad or painful results, or to imagine about the
possible adverse events in life is fear. Worry wears down health.
In
its developed stage, life becomes a failure or a struggle in itself. Man has to
certainly eradicate such an evil from his mind.
In order to
remove worries one has to understand the Law of Nature first. Finally
self-confidence must be infused. There must be the requisite quantum of
endeavour and courage.
Divine
Force alone is providing the life and all the necessities for life. Under this
Law of Nature everything necessary for the birth and existence of all living
creatures is provided.
A soul’s
self-endeavour and capacity when functioning with emotion, jealousy and
ignorance, result mostly in worries. However, the capacity to secure relief
from pains, miseries and worries and the strength to endure them is also
embodied in every living being. When such a capacity to face pains and worries
is drained from the life-energy, that is the state of unconsciousness where the
pinch of worries is not felt. Worries cannot either be solved or borne. One
should understand and try to remember always that a Mighty Force is protecting,
helping and guiding us all through our life.
In
proportion to the multitude of defects in the two sectors, that is, in the
culture and in the Government, the problems in the life of individuals will
also increase. Thereby the worries start and they develop to the stage of
interfering with and impairing peace and happiness in life. So the
responsibility of the individual increases more and more in dealing with
worries. The eradication of worries by a systematic practice is an Art of Life.

Analyse Worries First

The problems which lead to worries must
be divided into four groups:
1.
Problems that should be faced;
2.
Problems to be kept in abeyance knowing
the fact that they will be solved by the society or the Law of Nature in due
course;
3.
Problems to be ignored; and
4.
Problems to be solved immediately

Problems
that should be faced;

We should find out how best the problem
could be managed and learn to cultivate cheer so as to mitigate the suffering
of the one afflicted and others close to him. That and that alone is the way of
wisdom. Eg., Polio at the age of two.
Problems to be kept in abeyance
knowing the fact that they will be solved by the society or the Law of Nature
in due course;
While we perform our duties, we have to
cultivate the patience to allow Nature to bring in the result at the
appropriate time.
Problems to be ignored
We should quitely do what is best for
the family, unmindful of the purposeless advice proffered to us.
In a class with this, would be some
neighbours trying to provoke us with harsh words and mischievous remarks born
out of jealousy or plain spite. You must turn a deaf ear to them and let the
problem abate in course of time, unless the activities of the mischief-mongers
are of such dimension as to warrant positive action on your part.
If we are merely worried over problems,
it is no use, because both problems and worries will only increase. If these
problems are faced boldly with thinking and endeavour, they can be solved and
worries will cease to exist.
Poverty, disease, debts, difference of
opinion in the family, greed, jealousy, fear of death of self or relative, loss
of wealth, influence and prestige are generally the sources of our
worries.
We can get rid of poverty and debts by
hard work, perseverance and by observing the economy in spending. Disease can
be managed by taking proper medication and adopting a mode of life that is in
tune with Nature. Similarly, differences of opinion in the family can be got
over by mutual discussion and consent.
Loss of wealth, influence and fame can
be made up by our constant endeavour, righteousness and by sincere service to
the community at large. It is not wise to think that all the things will be
done automatically, even if we forget to do our duties.

Solution through Wisdom

The zeal and virtue of man may make the
providence joyous and his laziness and wrongdoing may convert the same
providence into miseries.
The Law of Nature always provides for
alternatives. On this basis, a new door is automatically opened when the
regular door is closed due to any reason. With zeal and perseverance, the new
path can be discovered in a short time.
Man is born in the world to perform
some allotted duties in order to purify the soul and reach the Divine Goal. One
should not waste time by giving room to worries of any kind in the mind.
Problems are part of life. With
patience and proper planning we should proceed to deal with the problems.
By building a house, by purchasing land
or by getting what we desire at the moment, we only fancy that our worries are
over. The next hill is seen only when we get to the top of the first hill and a
good traveller should be sportive enough to take the rough with the smooth,
realising and reconciling himself to the fact that it is all in the game of
life.
Only Nature can end all
our problems. It would suffice if we refrain from creating problems out of
ignorance and emotions.
As forr problems that
are not our making, we should develop the skill to tackle them with clear
thinking, free of emotion. Through mature wisdom, we can solve our problems
successfully and tactfully. We all do possess such inherent wisdom. What we
have to do is to induce and make our wisdom a strong tool to dispel our worries
so that we may achieve happiness, prosperity and peace of mind.
