EP-66 – Tips
for Overcoming Procrastination - Zero to Hero 100 days Personal Transformation
Journey

We are in
Episode 66.

இந்த YouTube channel லை வாழ வைக்கும் தெய்வங்களாகிய எல்லா
ஹீரோயின்களுக்கும், ஹீரோக்களுக்கும்
வணக்கம்.

As we have
completed all the 7 Habits of Stephen Covey, I want to address other best
behaviours, habits, simplifying tools, good books and resources.

This is the topic
we have not touched so far. Today’s topic is another dear friend of mine
Procrastination (my another விடாது கருப்பு).

I could not
overcome this behaviour of mine for a long time. Be it getting up early in the
morning, or doing that important work of the day. I used to procrastinate a
lot.

Basis for Procrastination
·
Lack of
commitment
·
“Chaltha
Hai Attitube”
·
It becomes
a Habit over a period of time.
·
I do
not plan my days
·
In
fact, I do not plan at all.
·
It was
affecting me personally and professionally.
·
I do
not feel good about myself.
·
I was
feeling inferior
·
Most of
the times, we tend to go into Paralysis Analysis Mode.
·
Thinking,
Thinking, Thinking without any action.
·
Change
is always new.
·
It
always comes with uncertainty.
·
It’s
always scary.

One fine morning, I
saw the video of Mel Robbins in youtube.

This is what I got
from the video; Mel was going through financial crisis in the family.

She was unemployed,
in financial trouble, drinking too much and losing grip on her duties as a mom
and wife. Her husband lost a lot of money in business ventures. Creditors were
calling day by day. Husband and wife were having daily fights, arguments, war
of words have become norm of the family. Basically there house had become Kurushetra
battle field.

Mel very well knew
that she had to go to work and earn money. She thought about it every day. She
was upset about husband’s words. Though she knew that she had to go for work,
she was procrastinating a lot all throughout the day. Basically she was not
doing anything. She was watching TV all through the day.

One day, it was
around 2am, passed midnight, she was watching a TV program. She noticed a
commercial on TV that showed a rocket launch. 5…4…3…2…1 – go! The next morning, she decided to launch out
of bed like a rocket. After counting down from five, she stood up, and that’s
how she discovered The 5 Second Rule.
It changed everything.

She heard 5, 4, 3, 2,
1 – GO – Rocket got launched. Boom…

Immediately it rang
a bell in her head. She wanted to follow the same approach in her decision
making. That was when a new Mel was born.

Next morning, she
left the house for work. She started applying this 5 sec rule in every decision
making. She does not procrastinate at all.

She start applying
this principle wherever she goes. Then she got a job. She start talking about
this 5 sec rule. She becomes a public speaker.

Today, as she
spreads awareness of the rule, she defines it as follows:
“If you have an
impulse to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your
brain will kill the idea.”

Then She wrote a
Book “5 Sec Rule”. Book became famous and there is a community get benefited by
this rule.

Now she becomes CNN
contributor, world-famous speaker and bestselling author Mel Robbins found her
own little counting trick. Back then, she was none of those things.

I bet you’ve used
counting as a psychological trick to get yourself to do something. Maybe you’ve
counted to three before jumping off the diving board at the pool, or tried
slowly counting to ten to calm yourself down when you were angry. The main
reason these tactics work is that they help us focus on what we need to do and
cut out all the consequences we don’t like to consider.
Here are 3 reasons
why this simple idea of a 5-second countdown can do the same for you:
1.
Through
little acts of courage, the 5 Second Rule makes you less afraid over time.
2.
There
are three reasons the “right time” will never come, so you just have to start.
3.
The 5
Second Rule helps you override your feelings, it’s a psychological
intervention.

THE FIVE ELEMENTS OF THE 5 SECOND RULE
1.       First: “The
moment you have an instinct…”
2.       Second: “To act
on a goal…”(
it’s an instinct that’s tied to a
goal
.)
3.       Third: “You must
push yourself…”
4.       Fourth: “To move
within 5 seconds…”
5.
Fifth: “Or your brain will kill it.”

A little science
behind this.
You are not saying,
1, 2, 3, 4, 5… you are reversing it. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – GO… by reversing the mind gets activated and helps pushing everyone
to action mode.

Mel refers to
world-renowned neuroscientist
Antonio Damasio‘s work. In a book called Descartes’ Error, he lays out the results of his research that suggest as
much as 95% of our decisions are ultimately decided by feelings, not facts. He
therefore calls us “
feeling machines that think, not thinking
machines that feel
.”

Personally It help
me a lot. I am able to get up early in the morning daily. However tired,
whatever may be the mind voice, I take this rule and try to apply it.

Benefits of 5 sec
rule:-
·
I like
this rule, because of the simplicity it brings.
·
Within
5 sec, I jump from the bed like a springboard.
·
I take
the decision and getting into action mode instead of viscous cycle of Paralysis
and Analysis mode which took me in downward spiral.
·
Then improvise
my work if needed.
·
This is
universal, timeless, can be applied everywhere.
Exercise: Start
applying 5 Sec Rule from Today.
Tagline for today:
5 Sec Rule.

Conclusion:-
The 5 Second
Rule is simple.
If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you
must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it.
If you’re sick of
telling others and yourself you’re feeling “fine,” when you’re clearly not
happy with where you are in life, this is for you. 5…4…3…2…1 – go!

Quotes:-
·
Stop Wishing. Start Doing.
·
I find that the Rule helps me assert control the
moment life tries to take control of me.
·
Fact: You are never ever going to feel like it.
Ever.
·
You can’t control how you feel. But you can
always choose how you act – Mel Robbins.
·
We are not thinking machines. We are feeling
machines that think.
