EP-71 – What
Next is the Mantra in Life - Hierarchy of Needs - Greatness Series - Zero to Hero 100 days Personal Transformation
Journey

We are in
Episode 71.

இந்த YouTube channel லை வாழ வைக்கும் தெய்வங்களாகிய எல்லா
ஹீரோயின்களுக்கும், ஹீரோக்களுக்கும்
வணக்கம்.

As we have
completed all the 7 Habits of Stephen Covey, I want take up “Greatness Series” to
address other best behaviours, habits, simplifying tools, good books, Videos,
TED Talks and resources.

Two weeks before, I
met my childhood neighbour in a wedding function. I met her after a decade. In
our deeper conversation, she told me that she was going through “Empty Nest
syndrome”.

What is empty nest syndrome?
Like Sivaji says in Gauravam Movie, their kids leave their house as they have
grown up(கிளி க்கு இறக்கை மொளச்சுடுது , கூண்டு விட்டு பறந்துடுத்து). Both of their kids got educated and left
their homes. Life became very lonely and boring for her.

That is what I want
to address today. We all have different needs and at different stages of life.
·
Do you
feel empty inside?
·
What
are our needs?
·
What
motivates us?
·
What’s
next?

To get some answers
to these profound questions. Let me go to Maslows. Today’s topic is Hierarchy
of Needs.

Human motivation
and behaviour are influenced by the urge to satisfy needs. Maslow’s hierarchy of
needs explains the types of needs that drive people. It states that lower needs
have to be satisfied first before higher needs are recognized and fulfilled.

Motivating ourselves
/ people is an important responsibility for a Leader / manager and it is
essential for him to understand and be sensitive to people’s needs.
1.
Physiological
needs: The basic requirements for survival – food, water, air, sleep. These
needs have to be satisfied first before any higher level needs are addressed. If
they are not met, nothing else matters.
2.
Security
needs: These cover physical safety, financial and job security. These are
important but not as demanding as physiological needs.
3.
Social
needs:  The need for belonging, love and
affection. Satisfied through family ties, friendships, social and religious
communities. These needs get activated when the first two needs are satisfied.
4.
Esteem needs:
These cover the need to be recognized and developing a sense of personal worth and accomplishment. These are higher level
needs which go far beyond the need for basic survival and security. Most
managers will be operating in this area.
5.
Self-actualization
needs: This is concerned with the desire for personal growth and a desire to fulfil
your potential. This has less to do about what others think of you. This level
is arrived at when you have accomplished many of your material goals. You start
increasingly looking inward for
satisfaction
.

Abraham Harold
Maslow was an American psychologist who was best known for creating Maslow's
hierarchy of needs, a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling
innate human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization.

5th level need is self-actualization. This is
the highest need for every human being. I can relate this to Stephen Covey’s
Begin with End in Mind(EP-22 – MasterPiece - Begin with End in Mind (Habit 2
Week) – Zero to Hero Series -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7-Xf5mNp60). Habit 2, Covey takes about Meaning, Legacy and Purpose in
Life. Those falls under self-actualization needs.

How is it related to all of us? It is applicable to all of
us. Understanding our needs will help us and working on it motivates us on
daily basis at the individual level.
As a manager, this helps to understand the need of our
team members, understand their respective needs and motivate the team members
according to their needs.
We all have our own underlying needs which motivate us on
a daily basis to get up and run towards those needs either knowingly or
unknowingly.
I asked her what she wants to do now. What is your
self-actualization need? What giver her happiness at this stage of her life.
I could understand my neighbour’s need. As she has
accomplished everything in life, she falls under self-actualization needs –
Level 5.
On deeper conversations, she discovered that she was
passionate about music. She learned music. On the busyness of life, she said,
she forgot her passion. She started singing and she wanted to teach others as
well.
What is your need?
What level are you in?
What motivates you on a daily basis.
Just analyse for 20 sec to 20 mins, please share your need
in FB comments and YouTube comments. Please share your level in the FB comments
as well.
I have seen similar issues in my LifeSkill coaching
journey as well. As Life Skill Coaches, we see Maslow thing in practice a lot. Our
underlying need motivates us on a daily basis. Let us all understand our
underlying need.
I realized that this YouTube channel is also a part of my Self-Actualization
need..
What else can come under self-actualization.
·
Running a marathon
·
Doing wild life photography
·
Doing a volunteering work
According to Maslow, self-actualizing people share the
following qualities:
·
Truth: honest, reality, beauty, pure, clean and unadulterated
completeness
·
Goodness: rightness, desirability, uprightness, benevolence,
honesty
·
Beauty: rightness, form, aliveness, simplicity, richness,
wholeness, perfection, completion,
·
Wholeness: unity, integration, tendency to oneness,
interconnectedness, simplicity, organization, structure, order, not
dissociated, synergy
·
Dichotomy: transcendence, acceptance, resolution, integration,
polarities, opposites, contradictions
·
Aliveness: process, not-deadness, spontaneity, self-regulation,
full-functioning
·
Uniqueness: idiosyncrasy, individuality, non comparability,
novelty
·
Perfection: nothing superfluous, nothing lacking, everything in
its right place, just-rightness, suitability, justice
·
Necessity: inevitability: it must be just that way, not changed
in any slightest way
·
Completion: ending, justice, fulfillment
·
Justice: fairness, suitability, disinterestedness, non
partiality,
·
Order: lawfulness, rightness, perfectly arranged
·
Simplicity: nakedness, abstract, essential skeletal, bluntness
·
Richness: differentiation, complexity, intricacy, totality
·
Effortlessness: ease; lack of strain, striving, or difficulty
·

·
Self-sufficiency: autonomy, independence, self-determining.[54]

Exercise: Please
answer these questions.
·

·
What is your need?
·
